About Us

Founded by Dr. C. H. Burnham in 1977, what is now known as ARL Afford-a-Care East was opened and grew into two low-cost veterinary clinics helping people in the Des Moines metro.

In 2025, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa began operating the ARL Afford-a-Care Clinics, expanding the organization’s ability to provide accessible veterinary care to pets and families across the community. As Iowa’s largest animal shelter, the ARL has helped more than one million pets in need throughout its history. The clinics are one of many ways the ARL works to keep pets healthy, with additional programs including Pet Food Pantries, Wellness Clinics, Veterinary Assistance and other resources designed to help pets and the people who love them.

As the cost of veterinary care increases, these clinics strive to provide services people need at an affordable price.

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa serves people and pets from across the state of Iowa through its programs, which include pet adoption, humane education, pet behavior training, spay/neuter, animal cruelty intervention, and much more. Its mission is to protect the welfare of animals, preserve the human-animal bond, and prevent the overpopulation of companion animals.

The ARL Afford-a-Care clinics operate with the same mission and strive to serve people and pets, providing the best care for your pets through affordable prices, extended service hours, and passionate, experienced staff. All proceeds from the ARL Afford-a-Care clinics are reinvested into community support programs at the ARL.

Through the ARL Afford-a-Care Clinics, as well as the ARL’s other initiatives, our vision is for all animals to be happy, healthy, safe, and loved in their homes.
